Captain America was a comic book hero, an “all-American” hero, who first appeared in the 1940s to fight the Nazis. He was originally Steven Rogers, born in New York to poor Irish parents. In the comic books he lives from the 1940s well into his assassination in 2007, although there are many story arcs that have him living longer.
