In the West, the cartoons that come from Japan are called "Anime". Anime is different from Cartoons in their animation style and their thematic messages. The first anime to become popular in the US was the movie " Akira" 《阿基拉》, afterwards many fans wanted more.

Shows such as "Gundam" 《高达》, "Sailor Moon"《美少女战士》, " Pokémon"《 神奇宝贝 》and "Dragonball Z"《七龙珠》 were very popular with children. Adults and teenagers watch more mature shows such as "Cowboy Bebop" 《星際牛仔》, and Neon Genesis Evangelion 《新世纪福音战士》. Any of the movies by Hayao Miyazaki (宫崎骏) are extremely popular as well.
